Health Information Technology Program 'Walks the Walk'

Turning education into professional action, Health Information Technology (HIT) students and faculty stepped up to the plate this week as Rochester hosted the 72nd annual Conference of the New York Health Information Management Association, Inc. at the Hyatt Regency.

MCC students served as tellers in the House of Delegates where a recent HIT graduate served as credentials chairperson. This was an in-person opportunity for students to be involved in the parliamentary procedure that they learned about in class at work in a professional environment. Another contingent of HIT students served in registration and hospitality functions.

Recent MCC graduates served as presiding officers at a number of educational sessions. Faculty members attending the sessions were extremely proud to watch their students operating with first-rate professionalism in these presiding officer positions.

A highlight of the week, spearheaded by Lori Laco-Schiano, was an MCC alumni outreach event. With a significant number of HIT graduates in the local healthcare workforce, the occasion of the State Conference was an opportunity to gather together our alumni since the inception of the HIT program (1963).  Bringing graduates of the program back into active involvement with MCC was our goal.  Our students benefit directly from the networking opportunities with these talented, accomplished grads.  Those grads in attendance were thrilled with the results and have offered to work with us to expand on the alumni outreach and further development of our grad profile booklet.

At the banquet held on Tuesday evening Donna Truelson was honored by the New York Health Information Management Association as MCC’s Outstanding HIT student 2007.  MCC HIT students also received two of four other awards presented by NYHIMA to eligible students from 11 college/universities throughout New York state.  Gail Pallo was the recipient of the 2007 NYHIMA Returning Student Scholarship while Donna Truelson was the recipient of the 2007 Mary M. Zannis Scholarship.  Congratulations on these achievements.

HIT students attending the activities obviously recognize the significance of a call to personal professional action.  They learned about the significant work that goes on behind the scenes in any successful conference.  They recognize that they need to volunteer and get involved with their professional organizations and were excited to be a part of this wonderful opportunity.
