Try Something New Tuesday

The Counseling Center and Disabiltiy Services office is highlighting “Wellness Week” and we want to highlight today as “Try Something New Tuesday”.

We are asking you to try something new on this Tuesday as a way to find a change of pace. We have been asked to try a lot of new things during this pandemic and this exercise is not intended to create any stress.  Trying something new does require ourselves to be vulnerable and that can be unsettling. However, when you take on a new task, hobbies or activity, it does not mean you have to become an expert. Trying something new could be a way to cope with stress, a way to increase motivation, or a way to increase self-confidence.  Trying something new can challenge us in a good way and help us stay motivated or work towards a goal.

The fear of the unknown can be very unsettling and we tend to avoid trying something new because we are afraid we will fail or not accomplish our desired goal. However, our bodies and minds flourish when we try something new. Trying something new may allow us to step outside of our comfort zone and extend our boundaries, but in a healthy way. We also need to recognize that trying something new should not cause danger to ourselves or others; rather, trying something new can be a positive and healthy challenge.

Here are some things you could try:

  • Try a new recipe.
  • Try a new exercise.
  • Listen to a new podcast.
  • Read a new book.
  • Listen to a new genre of music.
  • Practice mediation.

We hope you can try something new today and maybe even incorporate that new positive task, hobby, activity into your life beyond today.
