Learning Community Visits PSTF

On Friday, April 15, members of the Just Write Learning Community visited the Public Safety Training Facility on Scottsville Road. This learning community consists of CRJ 101, CRJ 103, COS 101 and TRS 105. This collaboration between Law & Criminal Justice has enrolled learning communities section for the past 14 years. Our tour guide was Officer Peter Brunett, Program Coordinator at the PSTF. While at the PSTF, the students were able to use the PRISM room. Here they were faced with simulations of “shoot or no shoot” situations that police are confronted with. Special thanks to Deputy Sheriff Jonathan Payne for hosting the group in the PRISM room. The students also toured the Monroe County Emergency Response Center. Here many agencies from across the county meet to coordinate responses to major emergencies.

The PSTF trains many first responders as well as police officers, peace officers, parole, probation EMT and fire fighters. This was a great opportunity for the students to experience firsthand the many opportunities in the public safety field.

The advantages of a learning community are that students are introduced to their major and meet the professors in their field. Also the assignments are coordinated with the four subjects. The students take several courses together. This learning community between Criminal Justice and Transitional Studies has been the longest continuous running learning community at Monroe Community College and has been operational for 14 years.
