Cybersecurity Awareness Training is for All Employees

The Cybersecurity Awareness and Training Policy, adopted by the Board of Trustees in October, requires all users with employee-level access to college IT resources to complete cybersecurity awareness training. This requirement applies to both part time and full time employees.

This is a benefit to all faculty and staff, paid for and provided by the college. The time investment for the required modules is minimal over the course of a year (less than an hour). With new scams, threats and risks coming at us at an ever-increasing pace, this training will help us stay safe both at work and in our personal use of technology.

Employee cybersecurity training is a requirement for MCC to be in compliance with several state and federal laws and industry regulations. We have been notified that the federal government Department of Education is ramping up enforcement of compliance with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), and MCC will undergo an audit later this year. The college must demonstrate that GLBA safeguards are in place, including employee training. Schools without GLBA safeguards can be found administratively incapable of administering Title IV funds, meaning our students would not be eligible for federal student aid. That would be catastrophic for our students and for the college, so it is important that all employees complete the provided training.

Faculty and staff are accountable for their responsible use of MCC technology resources as documented in the Acceptable Use of Technology Policy. This training educates us so that we know how to remain in compliance with our obligations. It is meant to prevent employees from doing things that expose our systems and networks to harm such as computer viruses and ransomware, or that can lead to identity theft and breaches of sensitive/protected information.
