Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) Workshop on April 27

Please join us on Tuesday, April 27, from 3:00 to 4:30, for the first of two workshops where we look closely at assignments and assessments through an equity lens. Zoom info is in the attached PDF.

Building on the TCC’s encouragement of small teaching and on the commitment to equity-minded pedagogy, this workshop will present techniques for making assignments and assessments more transparent. Mary-Ann Winkelmes, the principal investigator of the Transparency in Learning and Teaching project, calls this a “tilt,” a series of small changes to assignments and assessments in order to make them more transparent. TILT aims to help students understand how and why they are learning the material in your course, and research has shown that techniques that increase transparency improve both student success and retention.

During this workshop, we will apply a TILT checklist to an assignment so that we can discuss how these techniques work. Please have an assignment of yours ready to share with a colleague.

The workshop will be facilitated by Amy Burtner [TCC and English/Philosophy], Catharine Ganze Smith [English/Philosophy], Susan Hall [Curriculum and Program Development], Binh-Yen Nguyen [Information and Computer Technologies], and Anjali Parasnis-Samar [Library].

All faculty and professional staff are welcome.

A second workshop will take place on June 4 as part of the Teaching & Learning Conference. More details about that will be provided at a later date.
