James Baldwin Reading and Discussion Group


Rochester AmeriCorps has been awarded a grant from the New York State Council for the Humanities to host a reading and discussion group around the works of James Baldwin:

“The collision between America's democratic ideals and our racial history has always been fraught, but we are presently in an acute moment of racial and social tension, one that threatens to shut down productive dialogue. More than any other American author, Baldwin speaks to both the promise and failures of American democracy. With this new Reading & Discussion program we aim to provide citizens throughout New York State the opportunity to engage in substantive conversations about race and American society through Baldwin's writings.”

Please join Rochester AmeriCorps members and staff and scholar-facilitator Professor Tokeya Graham for our first discussion on Tuesday, September 27 from 6:00pm – 7:30pm in the Community Room at the Damon City Campus – room 4193.  We will provide the readings and light refreshments – so you only need to bring yourself!  You are welcome to attend one or all of the sessions.  Here is the full schedule, please mark your calendars accordingly:
