Request to migrate a course from Blackboard with K16! We have a service that helps migrate your course content from Blackboard more cleanly than with a regular export/import process to save you some clean up time. We know time is precious at the start of the semester. We are collecting requests to transfer online asynchronous, hybrid, or hyflex courses from Blackboard that will be taught in the fall semester.

We are prioritizing these online course modes because of their complexity. This tool helps with the conversion of Blackboard tests, discussions, and images. Please note that some clean up is still required.

We will collect our first round of courses by this Thursday at 2pm. Thereafter, requests will be processed weekly on Thursdays at 2pm. Please allow at least one week of processing time.

Courses will be migrated into a conversion shell and we can move the content in a practice course or live shell for you.

You can make a request by logging into our Virtual Campus Faculty Center and clicking on the K16 Request form.

Merging Courses! We know many faculty were waiting to hear more updates on the status of merging courses for the fall semester in Brightspace. We just received confirmation that we will be able to allow merging this semester. It is a manual process for our SUNY DLE administrator, so please allow sufficient processing time.

Since this is our first semester merging in Brightspace, we are instituting a merge request cutoff date of 8/17 by 5pm. Get your requests in early!

You can make a request by logging into our Virtual Campus Faculty Center and clicking on the Merge Request form.

Merging works differently in Brightspace. Your course content will be merged into the lower number CRN course shell, so make sure that is where your content is imported.

Once your courses are merged, you will be able to view the sections in your gradebook if you filter by “sections”.

If you are concerned that your courses will get canceled or reassigned, you may not want to merge this semester. We cannot promise that adjustments to merges or unmerging courses will be speedy. Thanks for your patience.

YuJa- Our new video server! We have integrated our new video server, called YuJa! We have activated the Single Sign On (SSO) process and integrated it within Brightspace so you can have access to your own video library, similar to Ensemble. We will be doing some additional testing this week, but you are welcome to check out some of the support documentation. We will provide more details soon.

Turnitin- Our new academic integrity tool! We have integrated Turnitin into Brightspace this week. Turnitin is an application that helps "uphold academic integrity" and detect plagiarism. This tool is very similar to its Blackboard equivalent, SafeAssign. We will be announcing some training opportunities provided by the vendor soon! Here is a quickstart video from Turnitin on how to enable it from a Brightspace Assignment and here are a few additional resources from Turnitin if you are interested. You will need to activate this tool for each assignment.

Give access in Brightspace to another instructor! One cool feature in Brightspace is that you, as the instructor of your course, can add other instructors to your course. If you are sharing materials, doing observations, this can save you time from having to reach out to our department to add someone to your course. Go to the Classlist tool (you may find this in your Course Admin area, and then go to “add an existing user”). Search for your colleague's name and then designate the role permission as either instructor or student.

When do courses “go live” in Brightspace? Any academic course on the master schedule has a corresponding course shell in Brightspace and it is pre-programmed to open 7 days prior to the course start date. Courses that begin on 8/29, are set to open on 8/22 at 12am, regardless of course modality.

We recognize that a LMS transition requires adjustment of materials and you may be “building the plane while flying”. You can hide content that is not ready for prime time (especially upcoming assignments, discussions, or quizzes)!

If you are teaching an online course, please make sure that your introductory materials, icebreakers, and Course Information Documents are accessible during the preview week.

If your online course is completely blank when students arrive on preview day, that can cause anxiety. Students want to know they landed in the correct place and learn how to begin your course. If needed, you could add a quick note in the course letting students know content is coming soon. New students often panic and call our help desk or the virtual campus office. Clear communication with your students during the start of the semester is helpful to everyone!

Tip: use the “student preview” option to view what students see. Click on your name in the top right corner in Brightspace and then change your role to a student. To exit, you will need to close the preview.

Stalled/In Progress:

While we do have faculty and student accounts created in Brightspace, we still do not have accounts for MCC staff. We know that staff have been patiently waiting for their own Brightspace accounts and we are letting you know that this is currently stalled because of SUNY global ID issues. We appreciate your patience and we do not have an estimate of the timeline.

The slowdown with the SUNY global ID issues has halted our progress on the ability for us to update course titles with more coherent names to include the course code/number/section and instructor last name. We also cannot update preferred names in Brightspace. Once SUNY has fixed the global ID issues, we should be able to do full runs to update this information.

SUNY Online (Degrees at Scale) Course Conversions- Bulk conversions have been stalled from SUNY. If you are teaching a SUNY Online course, you are able to export your content (from classroom.suny.edu) and import it into your SUNY Online course shell in Brightspace. This is probably the fastest way to get your content moved and prepared. All SUNY Online shells are located in our instance of Brightspace so you no longer have to log into two separate systems! Please reach out to our team if you need assistance.
