Veterans' Faculty Mentor Program

In order to provide an increasingly Veteran-friendly environment for students who are serving/who have served in the military, the Academy for Veterans’ Success will be launching the Veterans’ Faculty Mentor Program beginning with the 2011-2012 academic year.

VFMs will:

·         Serve as “civilian-ese” translators
·         Help Veterans establish realistic expectations of professors, professional staff and peers
·         Clarify academic standards and expectations
·         Refer Veterans to the necessary college or community resources if/as circumstances arise

The purpose of the program is to provide a way for Veteran students to negotiate the demands and dynamics of civilian university-level study better, in the hope this will increase their completion, transferability and (ultimately) professional success.

Please join me in congratulating the following individuals who were selected to serve as the first cohort of Veterans’ Faculty Mentors:

Mike Doolin
Kevin French
Mark Harris
Doug Hennenberg
William Horton
Jeff Kiggins
Bonnie Petrosino
Carmen Powers
Renee Rigoni
Richard Stewart
Holly Wheeler
Heather Williams

Any tenured Faculty member who also wishes to be considered to serve as a VFM, please send an email to < "
mailto:hwilliams@mornoecc.edu">.  I will provide additional program details and the criteria for possible selection as a VFM.

Any student wishing to be connected with a VFM should contact the Academy for Veterans’ Success Academic Advisor, Denee Martin, at <"
mailto:dmartin@monroecc.edu">.

Lastly, it would help immeasurably if teaching faculty would provide information to their students about the program. However, as student Veterans do not like to be singled out, it is preferable to either make copies of the attached flier for each of your individual students or to project the electronic version for the whole class. Those of you who are teaching on-line are more than welcome to post the flier there as well, but do advise students that the mentoring process will be a face-to-face experience and will require students to come to campus.

On behalf of the Veterans’ Faculty Mentor Program, and our student Veterans, we thank you all for your generous support,

Heather
