Silk and Wool, Carpet Creations Along the Silk Road

On April 15th, MCC will hold a broadly inclusive event that will showcase the richness of diversity of subcultures and ethnic groups in our community. The program starts at 6:00PM.

From 6:00-6:30 the audience will get a chance to view an exhibit of objects that were traded along the ancient Silk Road. The centerpiece of this show will be a collection of authentic hand-knotted Oriental rugs from all corners of the Silk Road. These beautiful masterpiece samples, which will be spread on floors outside of the MCC Theatre in Building 4, along with descriptions, will be on loan from the Oriental Rug Mart of Rochester. They represent art/industry of hand-knotted pile carpets of the "orient" from Tibet, Kazakhstan, Uzbekstan, India, Pakistan, Persia, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Turkey. The collection is magnificent and Mr. Sattari, Oriental Rug Mart owner, an Iranian-born scholar and expert on Oriental rugs, will be present to give explanations, demonstration and answer questions. Also Dr. Marvin Amstey a nationally known expert and scholar on antique collectible rugs, will be available to provide additional information.

Shahin Monshipour, MCC assistant professor in Sociology and Anthropology, organizer of the event, and researcher on the topic of Pastoral Nomadic Weavings, with expertise on tribal rugs of Iran, will be covering questions on the cultural context of the construction of such pieces.
