2.      Find a Mexican faculty partner – Work with Gale to identify a faculty partner via the online COIL Network website.

3.      COIL Academy – June to July is a 6 week online workshop designed to help you developing you and your faculty partner’s COIL module.

4.      Travel to Cuernavaca, Mexico & faculty partner’s campus – June 20 – 24th (on-site COIL Academy workshop) and June 25th – 26th (visit to faculty partner’s campus)

5.      Fall Semester 2016 – implement your COIL-enhanced course!

6.      September – November – your Mexican faculty partner will come visit MCC

COIL Defined:

*   “COIL is not a technology, but a teaching and learning methodology that develops intercultural competence by bringing together learners from different cultural backgrounds to collaborate in online learning environments.” (https://coil.cuny.edu

*   A faculty member partners with an international colleague to develop an experiential 3 – 6 week module where students collaborate via online platforms.  Modules can be as simple as assigning students to communicate via Facebook outside of class or as involved as requiring students to work together on a group project over the course of five to six weeks, using multiple online modalities.

*   In these ways, COIL is different from traditional online classes and is also known as “Globally Networked Learning”.

COIL as it relates to MCC’s and SUNY’s strategic visions:

*   COIL provides access to international education for the overwhelming majority of our students who cannot access studying abroad (MCC Mission.)

*   COIL encourages inclusiveness and collaboration (MCC Core Values.)

*   COIL modules, which incorporate diversity and global learning, are in line with our focus on incorporating High Impact Practices in our curriculum (MCC Direction One: Learning First.)

*   COIL will build partnerships between faculty as well as institutions (MCC Direction Three: Partnerships), which can be leveraged for faculty Fulbright Award applications.

*   SUNY and the World is part of SUNY’s Strategic Plan The Power of SUNY and the Six Big Ideas
