Programming Students Get Real World Experience

Students in Professor Sandra McCormack’s CIS10--Programming for Information Systems class are practicing their programming skills and learning about real-world business applications.

Motivated by the current flurry of discussions surrounding health care and flexible spending enrollment decisions, McCormack decided to teach her students about Flexible Spending Accounts by having them write a program to calculate the tax savings based on various levels of contributions to an FSA.  McCormack says, “Many people don’t understand the tax benefits associated with flexible spending accounts, especially young people who may be starting their first job and are being faced with making decisions about benefits.”

Students are using actual federal and New York state tax tables.  They are also learning about income tax rates and how to determine which filing status is most beneficial.  Many of the students taking the CIS101 course are Computer Information Systems majors who will seek careers in a variety business environments.
