Nationally Recognized Architect/Artist Lars Stanley to Speak at MCC MONDAY

The Visual and Performing Arts Department (VaPA) and the LeRoy V. Good Library (Brighton campus) are pleased to announce that they are collaborating to bring Lars Stanley, partner in Austin-based Stanley Architects and Artisans, to the MCC campus. Please join us for what promises to be a very exciting series of events on Monday, October 15, 2007.

At 12:00pm that day, Mr. Stanley will be lecturing on the 4th floor of the LeRoy V. Good Library, outside of room 2-452. His lecture, Sustainability in Architecture, Art and Design: The Pursuit of Right Living and a Spectrum of Practice, will focus on the marriage of architecture and the sustainable environment, using his own studio and other projects as case studies. Through rainwater collection and xeriscaping to photovoltaic systems that minimize energy usage, Stanley Architects Studio is an example of the successful integration of process and sustainable intent. Stanley’s stated approach is “to develop each project from its inception with a holistic, incorporated attitude to environmentally sensitive design.”

At 6:00pm that evening, Mr. Stanley will lecture in the Mercer Gallery, room 12-114, on Intersections: Art, Craft, and Architecture, along with his partner Lauren Woodward. Mr. Stanley will be speaking on the “philosophical mindset in which architectural design on one end of the continuum is inextricably tied to the hand-worked detail on the other end.” Stanley apprenticed with a carpenter, cabinetmaker and blacksmith in addition to his architectural degree and now hand forges metalwork for large architectural commissions as well as for smaller architectural details. His clients include the City of Austin, the National Wildflower Research Center, actor Richard Gere and director Steven Spielberg.

The evening lecture will be followed by a reception for the artists in the Mercer Gallery.
