MCC to Launch Service Day May 12

This year, The Center for Service Learning is working in conjunction with the United Way to create ‘Service Day’ for the MCC community. On Thursday, May 12th the United Way is hosting their annual ‘Day of Caring’ event, where members of the Rochester community are encouraged to participate in a community-service project with any one of hundreds of community agencies that are asking for assistance on this day. The United Way is serving as a clearinghouse for project registration and sign-ups, and the MCC community is encouraged to participate, as able.

Projects cover a large variety of areas, from preparing meal bags for kids at Foodlink, to sorting donated medical supplies for distribution by InterVol, to reading with children at #12 School, to painting, gardening and other spring cleaning activities at a large variety of community agencies. Chances are an agency you support is involved and if not, you can encourage them to register their project on the United Way Day of Caring site.

On Thursday, May 12th MCC is open and classes will be held as scheduled. However, the College supports those who would like to use their accrued personal time to volunteer with these agencies on this day. While there will need to be appropriate coverage of all offices, the College encourages departments to afford employees the opportunity to participate when possible. Students who do not have classes during project times are also encouraged to participate.

Several of our colleagues have agreed to participate and “lead” a group from MCC on various projects:

Alison Albright will be volunteering to organizing books for an ESOL classroom at Refugees Helping Refugees;

Rick Costanza will be volunteering with students and staff from the Department of Education at School 17 to help clean up the gardens and grounds;

Verdis Robinson and a class of history students will be selecting and volunteering at a community organization as well.

We hope that you will take the opportunity to join us on May 12th by volunteering with any of the community organizations listed. To do so, please use the link below to browse projects and register for the event, and please indicate MCC in the ‘Team Name’ field.
