Monroe Community College is discontinuing men’s ice hockey after the 2013-2014 season. The move is based on a continued lack of competition at the community college level, as well as the increasing cost of effectively maintaining the program.
The National Junior College Athletic Association fields just eight teams, including MCC, and two of those are located in North Dakota. Only 12 of MCC’s 25 regular season games this year are against community colleges, with the remainder of the schedule filled with club and junior teams.
MCC has fielded one of the most successful programs at the community college level since its inception as a varsity sport in 1999. Former Rochester Amerk Geordie Robertson was the team’s first head coach and guided the Tribunes to national tournament appearances in five of his six seasons. Craig Chamberlain then took over coaching duties in 2005, and he has led MCC to five Region III championships, four national runner-up finishes, and the program’s first NJCAA national title in 2012.
Coach Chamberlain is to be commended for his efforts with the MCC hockey program. We are recognized as one of the top programs in the NJCAA and we are proud of the accomplishments of our hockey players and coaches over the years.
