2nd Annual Rediscover the Genesee River Trip

The Geosciences faculty are pleased to announce the 2nd annual Rediscover the Genesee River guided field excursion. Join us on June 16th to explore the geology and local history of the lower basin of the Genesee River as it flows through the city of Rochester.  This day long trip will begin with a look at the geologic history of the Rochester region through the rocks that are exposed in the Lower Gorge. Witness the power of water to erode through solid rock: imagine what Rochester would have been like as a tropical delta hundreds of millions of years ago. The events of the past ice age glaciation have had a profound influence on Rochester landscapes. Learn about the formation Pinnacle Hills Range, the cultural and glacial history of Mt. Hope Cemetery, and events that changed the course of history (and the Genesee River). Our final stop for the day will be Mendon Ponds Park, renowned for its glacial features and for the headwaters of Irondequoit Creek. Other sites of interest will be visited as time permits.  This opportunity is open to the college community on a first come/first served basis, and transportatoin is provided.  Contact Angie Zury (x2425) to reserve a seat on a journey of discovery.
