Students Invest in the Future of Nursing, Establish Scholarship

With graduation less than a month away, MCC students have established the Student Nurses’ Association Future of Nursing Scholarship to help graduates cover licensure costs, including the National Council Licensure Examination—Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) registration fee. This is the first time current students have established a scholarship fund with the Monroe Community College Foundation.

“We fundraise a lot through apparel and chocolate sales in order to pay for our pinning ceremony,” said Amanda Siebert, president of the Student Nurses’ Association (SNA) who will be among this year’s graduates. “The SNA is a great organization. We wanted to do something really special this year.”

To become a licensed registered nurse in New York state, a nursing program graduate pays $200 to take the NCLEX-RN plus $143 for the actual license. Five $200 scholarships will be awarded on May 21 during the college’s annual pinning ceremony, a nursing school tradition.

“It’s a very big deal to be the first student organization to do something like this,” said SNA Vice President of Membership Chris Cicero who helped develop the scholarship. “This is something that will happen every semester for the next five years. People always need help to take the NCLEX-RN to start their careers.”
