Pre-collegiate programs host third annual Shadow Day

On November 8th, the Department of Education, Pre-collegiate Programs Liberty Partnerships, STEP and Upward Bound programs at MCC hosted their third annual Shadow Day to give students a realistic and practical experience of college life.  Twenty-four pre-collegiate students visited the Damon City Campus to attend morning classes, and were hosted by MCC students.  Many of the participants are from the RCSD and are the first in their family to attend college.

Participants were given a tour of the Damon City Campus, facilitated by peer leaders.  Professors generously opened their classrooms to give the shadowing students a glimpse of college life.  The classes sampled included subjects as diverse as biology, education, mathematics, criminology, and literature. Visiting students were matched with host classrooms according to their career interests.

After classes, the pre-collegiate students attended a Student Support Services presentation on MCC's admissions process and joined a large group discussion that raised the question, “Are there benefits in furthering my education after high school?” led by Patricia Kennedy and Amanuel Malik.  The students also listened to current MCC students – Faith Beaty, Jonathan Roman and and Tyree Simmons – talk about their college experiences.

Afterward, a luncheon was held in room 4193, where Rick Costanza spoke before the assembled students.  The day closed with certificates being presented to the participants.

The pre-collegiate programs would like to offer their sincere thanks to all the hosts, professors and speakers that made Shadow Day such a great success.  Your generosity made this day possible.
