Grading in Banner Survival Tip #3

How to Convey the Information That You Usually Write on the Back of the Grade Roster Now That There is no Grade Roster to Write It On

First of all, let me say thank you to all the people in the past who have written their notes on the BACK of the grade rosters. There were always a handful of people who refused to write on the back and would write lengthy notes across all the scanning bubbles on the front of the rosters. No amount of pleading would make them stop. We were considering brute force this semester but, unfortunately, we won’t have the chance to use it because we no longer have grade rosters. I was dying to write an article challenging these people to ‘make my day’ by doing it just one more semester. I’ll have to channel my aggression elsewhere.

So, how will you ask questions and make notes about withdrawals, missing students, and other information you want to relay to those of us processing grades?  If your first impulse was to say, “Well, I know I’m NOT supposed to call you…”, you are off to a good start! We often work on this type of research after hours so having it in writing is the most efficient way. Scribbled phone messages are often incomplete, easily misplaced, and less efficient than working on a group of grading related problems all together rather than a piece at a time.

You may be surprised to hear that we get several HUNDRED written notes requiring research during grading. Some of them require quite a BIT of research that involves other offices, imaged files, and phone calls. It helps to have the original question in hard copy so we can make notes and attach documents as we work our way to the solution. With this need in mind, here is what we are going to do to provide you with note sending capability.

We now have a grading mailbox set up that will be accessed and answered by grading personnel in R&R. All your grade related notes should be sent to:

Please do NOT send grading questions/notes to me and especially do not send them to Linda Ziegler. Linda is now working in the Counseling and Advising Center and, although I’m sure she would be very conscientious about forwarding the questions to the grading mailbox, it would speed things up if you sent the questions to the new grading mailbox directly. I’d like to conclude with, “I look forward to hearing from you” but that would be a huge lie and I don’t want to risk getting coal in my stocking!
