Rochester AmeriCorps members volunteer for Earth Day event

Nineteen Rochester AmeriCorps members and program staff participated in the 7th Annual Pick Up The Parks event sponsored by the Monroe County Parks Department. This is the second year Rochester AmeriCorps has acted as the host organization for Ontario Beach Park; supporting our members and community members in picking up trash and sorting collected recyclables across the beautiful 39 acre park that borders the shores of Lake Ontario.

The annual initiative engages hundreds of citizens each year at 22 county parks across our region. These efforts support the protection of our vital natural resources and waterways. Our members working at Ontario Beach Park learned that the Great Lakes contain 20% of the world’s supply of fresh water, and 90% of North America’s supply of fresh water. We also learned that engaging in activities like this one, even just one day a year, can drastically reduce the introduction of pollutants and toxic materials into the water system helping to create a healthier ecosystem for all residents to live, work, and play.

Rochester AmeriCorps is proud to be a part of this great day and our staff and members look forward to continuing the message of conservation and community action to support a happy and healthy Rochester and Monroe County.
