Bess Watts Recognized in National AFSCME


Bess Watts, Principal Library Clerk and member of the MCC Diversity Council, is the President of the local chapter of Pride at Work (PAW) AFL-CIO.  She is a member of the National Executive Board of Pride at Work, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) constituency group of AFL-CIO representing small LGBT community chapters throughout the country.  Bess has been nationally recognized for assuming leadership roles in the Fall 2011 edition of “AFSCME Works – The Magazine of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO.”  Bess led a successful campaign to get the MCC CSEA union to support LGBT causes, beginning with having domestic partner benefits included in her union’s contract.  She was quoted as being instrumental in the successful passage of the New York Marriage Equality bill.
