TCC at DCC Discussion #3 of Bain

Please join the TCC at DCC for our third discussion of Ken Bain's (2004) book, What the Best College Teachers Do (Chapter 7 and Epilogue), titled "What We Leave".  This professional development opportunity will be held on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 from 12:00-12:50pm in the TCC, Room 5091.  To quote Bain from page 172:

"With a robust system of evaluation, we can continue to explore what the best teachers do that makes them so effective.  We can have rich conversations about our educational objectives and how best to achieve them.  We can apply one of the central conclusions of this study:  excellent teachers develop their abilities through constant self-evaluation, reflection, and the willingness to change."

Our discussion will center on these two questions:  1) Given that we recognize the importance of teaching to various student learning styles, how do we develop assignments, exams and other measures of learning that take these styles into account?"; and 2)  How do we assess and evaluate our own teaching, in our efforts to become one of "the best college teachers"?

The DCC Library has copies of Bain's book available - just stop in and ask!  However, you do not have to have read Bain to benefit from and/or to contribute to this Discussion.  Bring your ideas, your lunch and show up!

And, remember that the author, Ken Bain, will be presenting his work at MCC on Friday, January 12, 2007.  Details to follow soon!
