Green Tip: Fall Closet Clean-Out

As fall season arrives, it is a good time to clean out your closet and prepare for winter. According to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), “Recycling textiles reduces greenhouse gases (GHGs). GHGs from textile production totals 1.2 metric tonnes of CO2 -- more than emissions from international flights and maritime shipping combined.”

Here are some tips for being green as you sort out your clothes.

  • Donate – Give away those shorts, tops, and other items that you didn’t wear all summer.  It is likely that you won’t put them on next year either!
  • Upcycle – Make something new from items you don’t want to wear.  T-shirts can become no-sew reusable bags or you can create new clothes from old!
  • Swap – Organize a clothing swap with friends and family to refresh your wardrobe.
  • Sell – You might be able to sell this year’s gently-used fashions at your local consignment shop
  • Reuse – That torn old cotton t-shirt will make a great dust cloth; plus you will save not buying disposable towels for those cleaning jobs.
  • Inventory – Check out what winter clothes fit before buying anything new!  Consider buying secondhand at a thrift store for things you need.
