MCC Faculty Members Gain National Recognition

In June 2007, “The Greenwood World Encyclopedia of Popular Culture” was published. Less than a year later, the six-volume reference set has sold out. According to Lynn Bartholome, Ph.D., associate professor, English/Philosophy and editor of the Middle East and North Africa volume, a second printing in now in the works.

And there’s more good news.

An independent panel of judges recently decided that the set deserves the top award in the country for a popular culture reference book.  The "https://www.pcaaca.org/awards/filmlit.php" Ray and Pat Browne Award  for best reference/primary source work in Popular and American Culture is an annual honor that will be presented at the upcoming "https://www.pcaaca.org/"PCA/ACA Conference in March.

Bartholome will be there to accept.

“I’m really happy that all the people at MCC who did such phenomenal work are being recognized,” she said. “We have a lot of very good, very gifted scholars here.”

In addition to serving as volume editor of the Middle East and North Africa book of the series, Bartholome, who is the president of the Popular Culture  and American Culture Associations, wrote the chapter on periodicals. Several of her English and Philosophy Department colleagues  contributed chapters as well. These include: Matthew Hachee, architecture; Stasia Callan, dance; Elizabeth D. Johnston, fashion and appearance; Heather L.  Williams, food and foodways; Kathleen O'Shea, sports and recreation; Holly Wheeler, transportation/travel; and Ann Tippett and Michael Doolin, theater and performance.
