AmeriCorps Week - Habitat For Humanity

Saturday, March 5th began the annual celebration of AmeriCorps Week, a time to recognize the commitment of AmeriCorps members and alums by highlighting the impact AmeriCorps makes across our nation every day. The theme for 2016 is #AmeriCorpsWorks and to start off the week, Rochester AmeriCorps members decided to show how hard AmeriCorps members work by participating in a Flower City Habitat for Humanity build.

The 25 degree weather didn’t damper the excitement of members as they arrived at 8:30 am, ready to get to work and get dirty. Split between two houses in the Josana neighborhood of Rochester, our members and other volunteers spent the whole day painting rooms, laying baseboards, installing porch railings and mounting kitchen cabinets.

At the end of the day many were tired and covered with paint and saw dust, but all felt pride at seeing the work that had been accomplished. When reflecting on favorite parts of the day, answers ranged from gaining new skills, meeting the future homeowners, and learning about a new opportunity to give back to the community. From the enthusiasm of our members it seems clear that we will be back soon to continue work with Flower City Habitat.
