Hummus, Tabouli and Building 9

For lunch today I had hummus and tabouli. I have no idea what either is made of but they were good.  As I was eating these strange, to me, substances and then following them with a diet coke and Junior Mints chaser, I contemplated how my current dining confusion mirrored my building 9 confusion. (I obviously had forgotten to bring something to read.) I like what they’ve done to building 9 but it confuses the heck out of me.

I’ve tried to walk around over there but I always forget my hard hat so am stopped before I can get to the end of the hallway.  I did discover the WOLK wing which was not at all where I thought it should be.  Is it possible that they moved it this summer?  I have a detailed architectural map but I can’t read it until someone lends me the Hubble Telescope.  If there is anyone who has any confidence that I know what I’m doing with building 9, please disillusion yourselves immediately. If anything has gone wrong, we’ll get it all straightened out the first week of classes.

As is always true this time of year, I will be making room changes up until the first day of classes. I do work Labor Day weekend. These last minute changes are necessary to accommodate last minute equipment needs, last minute information about professors or students with special needs, and last minute increases in enrollment.  Please plan to get up a little earlier on Tuesday and check your room assignments before you start your teaching day.  Something may have changed over the weekend.

The students received their schedules on Wednesday, 8/31/11. Room changes made after this time will be followed by an email/updated schedule to the students and a room change sign posted on the original classroom door.  The first week of classes everyone is involved in getting the students to the correct location. If you are helping a student and he is showing you a schedule printed on a bill or something older than the 8/31 schedule, he is probably looking for an incorrect room. A great deal of the first day of classes confusion is because the students are using months old information rather than their current schedule.

Unless you have a room emergency, please email me with your room change requests. I like to keep my phone open for emergencies and I can’t do a room change on the phone. If I take down the information via phone it’s not in my usual format (email) so it sometimes slips through the cracks. And coming to my office is taking your life into your hands. Our office is locked. There are several million students clustered at our windows with questions. It’s not a good place to be. I have to be here. You don’t. Save yourself while you can.

Remember, we are a team. I want you to love your room. I’ll keep trying until we find the best arrangement we can, short of actually getting out there with my missing hard hat and constructing a new building.

Have a wonderful fall semester!
