Essayist Barry Lopez to Visit MCC

Barry Lopez, essayist, short story writer and international traveler will present a lecture on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 7 p.m in the Monroe Room of MCC's new Campus Center.

Considered one of the nation's premier nature writers, Lopez is the author of several award-winning books including "Artic Dreams," a richly textured nonfiction exploration of human and animal life in the far north,  which earned him the National Book Award.  Most recently, he's published a collection of stories, "Light Action in the Caribbean." “These are quietly astonishing tales, glistening with precision,” wrote the New York Times. The Washington Post called him a “sweet stylist, finding the right voice for each of his characters and offering lyrical descriptions of natural beauty.”

Lopez has received numerous awards including the Literature Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the John Burroughs Medal, National Science Foundation, the John Hay Award for 2001, Pushcart Prizes in fiction and nonfiction, and a Lannan Foundation Fellowship. His work appears regularly in Harper’s, The Paris Review, Orion, and The Georgia Review.
