Reminder - Announcing a June Lecture: Tools for Teachers

Elaine Tarone, a guest speaker who has been actively involved in research and teaching on the topic of second language acquisition for more than 35 years, will give a lecture from 9 AM to 11 AM on Monday, June 13th in the Warshof Conference Center, Flynn Campus Center, Monroe B. In her lecture, suitable for faculty in all departments, Dr. Tarone will show why language teachers can and should focus on the learner language that their students produce in their classrooms, both in unscripted oral language use and in writing.  She will provide concrete examples in a presentation supported by Power Point, with professionally-produced video clips of language learners engaged in improvised, unscripted oral activities. The audience will be invited to share their insights and reflections about the learner language they see and hear, and to consider implications for pedagogical practice in the language classroom.

Elaine Tarone is the Director of the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) and Distinguished Teaching Professor in Second Language Studies at the University of Minnesota. CARLA is internationally known for its large website of resources for language teachers, its intensive summer institutes and conferences, its working papers and electronic newsletters. Professor Tarone is widely published and internationally recognized for her research on second-language acquisition, in such areas as interlanguage variation, the strategic competence of learners, and speaking skills in a second language.

A light lunch will be served following the lecture. An RSVP to Linda Hickey ("mailto:Lhickey@monroecc.edu") will be appreciated.

Sponsors are the ESOL and Foreign Languages Department and Carol Adams, Dean, Interdisciplinary Programs Division.
