In-Powered: Transcending the Barriers to Academic Success.

In collaboration with the MCC Diversity Council, "In-Powered" is a series of events that will provide an ongoing opportunity for students and the MCC community to engage in discussions on retention and academic success, while focusing on factors that impact specific populations in American higher education. This initial panel discussion, "Transcending the Barriers to Academic Success," will focus on ‘Black Male Student Success in Higher Education: A Report from the National Black Male College Achievement Study.’ This report discusses the national issue of educational outcomes for this population in recent years and provides insights gathered from those who have managed to navigate their way to and through higher education, despite all that is stacked against them. This report was conducted by the University of Pennsylvania Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education State, and to date, is the largest ever qualitative research study of Black undergraduate men.

The goal of the panel is to provide insight from different perspectives on the issues related to the success of black males in college. The panel will be comprised of a recent MCC graduate, current MCC student, and two MCC employees from the Damon City and Brighton campuses.

Students attending the program will be eligible for a raffle to win a $50 bookstore credit!

Come join us for a lively discussion on Monday April 23, 2012. DCC Multi-purpose room 4013. Noon to 1:00pm.
