MOOCs are a hot topic in the open education movement. These Massive Open Online Courses connect people across time and distance barriers and provide an accessible forum to collaboratively learn and interact with content, often integrating social media tools to enhance the course and the learner experience.
Traditional online courses have enabled colleges to reach more students while charging tuition, carrying credit, and limiting enrollment. In contrast, MOOCs are free, usually credit-less, and massive in size. MOOCs present an opportunity for institutions to experiment with extending their brand and to diversify their instructional portfolio.
