Doris M. Connelly, Associate Professor Emerita, Biology


I am saddened to inform you that Associate Professor Emerita Doris M. Connelly, Biology, passed away on April 29, 2009. She is survived by her sisters, nieces and nephews.

Her funeral mass is being held today, Tuesday, May 5 at 10:30 am in the chapel of the Mercy Center, 1437 Blossom Road. In lieu of flowers, her family wishes contributions to be made to the American Cancer Society, Lifetime Care Hospice of the Sisters of Mercy.

Doris began her 28-year career at MCC in 1963 as an instructor of microbiology at the Alexander Street Campus. Prior to MCC, Doris worked as a medical technologist and assistant director of laboratories at St. Mary’s Hospital. At MCC, she was promoted to assistant professor in 1968 and associate professor in 1983. She was recognized for her devotion to her work and her passion for lifelong learning. Throughout her career, Doris continued to study genetics, biochemistry and microbiology at the University of Rochester and Syracuse University. She would often help prepare materials for biology labs and help new faculty members acclimate to the department.

Doris retired from the college in June 1991 and her distinguished record of service was recognized two months later when the MCC Board of Trustees gave her the rank of associate professor emerita.
