Hispanic Heritage Brown Bag Session:  Poetry From a Latina at Heart

What does it mean to be a Latina at Heart? Lori D. Nolasco, PhD in Comparative Literature, answers this question through her book, Ariadne of the Freezing Rains/Ariana de las lluvias heladas. In the Greek myth of Ariadne, the abandoned woman later became the wife of an Olympian god, Dionysus.  For Lori, the Dominican Republic is “an island not of abandonment but of safe haven.”

Come join Lori, at both the Damon City and Brighton campuses, as she introduces the poetry readings (in English and Spanish) with songs from Spain (Mocedades) and Mexico (Alejandro Fernández).  She invites all students, staff and faculty to come forward to express their love for the Latino culture(s) in poetry or song in an open mic and “round robin” fashion.

This is a “tertulia (tare-too-lee-ah)”, a Spanish term for brown bag session.  It is sponsored by the Diversity Council Professional Latinos United for Success (PLUS): Building on Human Capital.
