Women's lacrosse wins regional title in first year


The MCC women's lacrosse team won a Region III title in its first year of existence, topping host Herkimer County CC 8-6 on Sunday.

The Tribunes (14-1) had defeated Erie CC 18-0 in the semifinals on Saturday.
Megan VanValkenburg (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) scored the game-winner against Herkimer with 7:41 remaining for the Tribunes.  VanValkenburg finished with four goals and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Tournament MVP Amanda Shapiro (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) had another big game in goal for MCC, stopping 14 shots to help preserve the victory.

Shannon Harris (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) added two goals in the championship game, while Carey Glover (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) and Teresa Sierzega (Irondequoit, NY/Eastridge) each had one.  Dana Chubb (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) dished out two assists.

MCC had no problem in the semis against Erie.  Shapiro made nine saves for the shutout and VanValkenburg had six goals and three assists.  Brett Vyverberg (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) added six assists, while Chubb had three goals and two assists and Harris and Glover two goals and one assist apiece.  Sierzega also added two goals.

Harris and Ashley Pezze (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
MCC will now compete in the NJCAA National Tournament this weekend back at Herkimer.  Stay tuned to the MCC Athletics website for more information.
