TODAY: World AIDS Day Town Hall with Keynote Dr. William Valenti

In recognition of World AIDS Day, Monroe Community College welcomes Dr. Valenti who will give a keynote highlighting the impact of being infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. The World AIDS Day event will take place at the Downtown Campus on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 @ Noon in High Falls A/B.

We encourage all faculty, staff and students to attend.

Free HIV & STD Testing will also be available in the Downtown Wellness Promotion Center (2nd Floor - Rm 226) from 11am - 1pm

HIV/AIDS Statistics:

According to UNAIDS (May 2017): There were approximately 36.7 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2015. Of these, 1.8 million were children (<15 years old). An estimated 2.1 million individuals worldwide became newly infected with HIV in 2015 (HIV.gov).

1.1 million people in the US are living with HIV, and 1 in 7 of them don't know it. The estimated number of annual new HIV infections declined 10% from 2010 to 2014. Gay and bisexual men, particularly young African American gay and bisexual men, are most affected (CDC.gov).

In New York:
· Up to 5,200 New Yorkers will become infected with HIV this year
· Approximately 181,000 people in New York currently live with HIV/AIDS.

In Rochester:
· Rochester has the 2nd highest HIV infection rate per capita in the state, outside of New York City.

WILLIAM M. VALENTI, M.D.

Senior Vice President for Organizational Advancement, Co-Founder, and Staff Physician

Dr. Valenti is a graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin and co-founded Community Health Network in 1989. He is Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and completed his Infectious Diseases training at the University of Rochester. He is a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He has been active in HIV-related activities since the early 1980s and is chair of the Infectious Diseases Subcommittee of the Medical Society of the State of New York. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and scientific abstracts on HIV medical care, infectious diseases and health care epidemiology and infection control. Dr. Valenti has recently served as Chair of the Hepatitis C Guidelines Committee for the New York State Department of Health.

As senior vice president for organizational advancement, Dr. Valenti is responsible for aligning the organization's strategic vision with philanthropic resources. In addition to his longtime role as a staff physician and clinical researcher, he will drive progress toward strategic goals and new clinical initiatives through the development of relationships with organizations engaged in the region's healthcare delivery, health policy and system reform.
