Winter Sports Wrap Up


MCC's winter sports teams finished their seasons successfully. The women's basketball team (25-3) is scheduled to compete on Thursday, March 20 at the NJCAA National Div. II Women's Basketball Tournament at Hagerstown Community College in Hagerstown, Md. The team will play the winner of the Northwest Shoals and Kankakee Community College game. To qualify for the national tournament MCC defeated Genesee Community College in the Region III finals. Nastassia Boucicault was named tournament MVP. Janitha Knight, Caitlin Macpherson and Boucicault were named to the all tournament team.

The men’s and women's swim teams won both regional and northeast district competitions. By doing so, the teams qualified for the NJCAA national swim meet at Erie Community College. The women finished third overall. Sophomore Urska Ros was a national champion in three events (500 yard freestyle, 100 yard butterfly and the 200 yard butterfly). Ros was also named female swimmer of the meet and earned All-American honors. Leigh Anne Dubois earned All-American recognition and placed fourth in the 1650 yard freestyle. Head coach Daniel Dubois was named the Women's Coach of the Year.

The men's swim team finished fourth at nationals. Two swimmers, Michal Bogacki and Nicholas Prima, were named All-Americans. Bogacki was a national champion in the 200 yard IM and Prima placed fourth in the 200 yard breast stroke.

The MCC men's basketball team finished the season with a 24-6 record after a tough loss to Genesee Community College in the Region III finals. Five players were named to the Western New York All-Conference Team: Lataiva Escho (1st team), Mindaugas Boruta (2nd team), Osita Obieke, Phil Valenti, and Andre Vanterpool (honorable mention) .

The Tribunes ice hockey team finished the season with a 13-5-1 record. They lost in the national semi-finals to MSU-Bottineau (5-4). MSU went on to become the national champions. MCC defeated SUNY Canton in the consolation game (9-1). Head Coach Geordie Robertson earned Region III Coach of the Year. Three players earned Region III 2nd team honors: Jason Fausette, Bob Mowry and Todd Guerin. Fausette was also named to the All-Rookie team.
