Excellus CEO Explains Why Health Care is a Community Effort

In his speaking out essay, “Teamwork has paid off for area patients, health care providers,” David Klein, CEO of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, noted how Rochester’s health care system has truly been a community effort. His examples included how “Local health insurers and hospitals have joined forces to ensure an adequate health care work force by helping to expand the nursing program at Monroe Community College, among other moves.”

In 2002 Strong Health, ViaHealth, Unity Health System, Excellus and Preferred Care joined forces to commit $1,000,000 to the Monroe Community College Foundation to help increase the number of associate degree graduates from MCC’s nursing program by about 30 percent. The funding has been used to add staff and infrastructure support in order to prepare more nurses in response to the local nursing shortage.
