VaPA Communication Faculty Present Workshop


On Wednesday, February 25, four members of the MCC Communication faculty presented a workshop for high school and community college teachers at the WXXI Public Broadcasting Center in Rochester.  The MCC faculty conducting the "How to Produce a Video" were Tamara Hillabush Walker, Frederick Burger, Tom Proietti and Barry Goldfarb.

The workshop was part of a national grant received by WXXI to partcipate in My Journey Home, a PBS documentary that will be broadcast on April 7 dealing with issues that new immigrants face when they come to America.  Students from local schools may enter a competition to produce audio, video or written essays on the topic of immigration.  Judging the video portion of the competition will be a panel of recent MCC Communication graduates.

Tamara Hillabush Walker studied broadcast journalism at Ithaca College (BS) and Syracuse University (MS). She worked for several years as a broadcast news producer at WROC-TV8 before coming to MCC in Fall 1999.

Frederick Burger has been teaching at Monroe Community College for the past three years. Prior to teaching, he was an independent fIlm and video writer/producer. His company also provided design, marketing communications materials and training programs for Fortune 500 companies. He has also produced documentaries for PBS and has won several national and regional awards for his writing and directing.

Tom Proietti has held numerous positions in the media. He founded the Communication/Journalism program at St John Fisher College and has taught at MCC since 1985. He is a former vice president of marketing and programming for Time Warner Communications in Rochester.

Barry Goldfarb is chairman of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Monroe Community College and has been teaching at the college level for 27 years.  Prior to teaching, he was employed at WXXI-TV and held a variety of positions in television production, programming and administration.
