Spring Reading Group to Discuss "Educated: A Memoir" by Tara Westover

This spring's reading group will be reading Educated: A Memoir, by Tara Westover. Westover's acclaimed, award-winning 2018 memoir describes her personal and educational journey. From Westover's official biography:

Born in Idaho to a father opposed to public education, she never attended school. She spent her days working in her father's junkyard or stewing herbs for her mother, a self-taught herbalist and midwife. She was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom, and after that first taste, she pursued learning for a decade. She graduated magna cum laude from Brigham Young University in 2008 and was subsequently awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. She earned an MPhil from Trinity College, Cambridge in 2009, and in 2010 was a visiting fellow at Harvard University. She returned to Cambridge, where she was awarded a PhD in history in 2014.

You can listen to an interview with Westover on WBUR's Here and Now to get a sense of her voice and her experience.

Educated: A Memoir is broken into three parts. The reading group schedule will be as follows, with rooms available on the Brighton and Downtown campuses and participants connected by conference calls:

  • March 22: Part1
  • April 26: Part 2
  • May 24: Part 3

If you are able to join in this semester, please send me a note to let me know, but also know that you can always just drop in to discuss this powerful and poignant memoir about the process of becoming Educated.
