Article Mentions MCC's Efforts in Home Health Aide Training
The Democrat and Chronicle's Dec. 18 issue published an article ("Program tries to remedy home caregiver shortage") on the critical shortage of home health aides and the Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute Inc. program as a possible model, for Rochester and the nation.
Marcia Lynch, who coordinates health care career-related programs for MCC Economic and Workforce Development Center, was mentioned in the article:
Marcia Lynch, of Monroe Community College's Workforce Development department, said 80% of trainees she works with are single moms, but local organizations have put structures in place to help them avoid pitfalls.
Through Catholic Family Center and Action for a Better Community, there's Bridges 2 Success, a statefunded adult mentoring program that partners participants with mentors to help them create a long-term plan toward self-sufficiency.
The federally funded Health Profession Opportunity Grant (HPOG) pairs mentors -- called navigators -- with participants to create a road map for their transition into a career in healthcare. HPOG can help with child care, transportation and basic skills training.
Marcia is part of a team working with Workforce Development Institute to provide home health aide training with other community partners, including Common Ground, Finger Lakes Performing Provider System, Catholic Family Services, and Action for a Better Community.
