MCC Public Safety Bike Patrol

In early 2017, the Department of Public Safety at MCC applied for, and received, a MCC Foundation Internal Funding Grant for two new patrol bicycles and associated equipment. These new additions have allowed the Department to expand its Bike Patrol, placing an emphasis on increased community policing and fuel cost savings with the officers riding bicycles instead of driving patrol cars. In June 2017, Campus Peace Officers Michael DeBruycker and Joseph Zarcone will be added to the Bike Patrol roster after attending training at the Public Safety Training Center.

Some will remember that Public Safety officially re-launched its Bike Patrol in June of 2016, adding this specialized unit to patrol operations. Campus Peace Officers Anthony Iacuzzi and Thomas Turner were selected to become Bike Patrol officers based on their interest, physical stamina, and outgoing personalities.

Selected officers must complete the required specialized training, a demanding 40-hour week sponsored by the Public Safety Training Center, learning how to ride a bike "like a law enforcement officer". This is uniquely different from everyday bike riding, as officers learn to ride their specially equipped bicycles up and down stairs, over curbs, and through traffic with at least 20 pounds of gear strapped around their waists, all while conducting routine patrol duties (check out the attached pictures of the Bike Patrol in action).

To date, Officers Iacuzzi and Turner have attended the MCC Sustainability Cycle event, the Spring Fling, the Downtown Campus 321 Walk, and will participate in future events such as the MCC Employee Field Day and Homecoming 5K. Look for our Bike Patrol officers rolling around the campus and feel free to ask for them at your upcoming event!
