College 101 for Parents

The Admissions Office hosted a “College 101 for Parents” workshop on Thursday October 13, 2005.  325 attendees, which is a record number of parents and students, attended this workshop.  This number represented over 192 families who participated in the comprehensive college planning workshop.  This attendance far exceeded our expectations.

Presenters from SUNY Geneseo, SUNY Brockport, St John Fisher College, and MCC offered a panel discussion on evaluating high school transcripts and “How Colleges Choose Their Freshman Class.”  High school counselors from Brockport, Penfield, Rush Henrietta, and Allendale Columbia participated in a panel discussion on “How to Choose A College.”   Monroe #1 BOCES College Transition Specialists presented “Transition from High School to College” for students with disabilities.  MCC presenters included Donna Burke who presented on “Home Schooled Students and the College Selection Process, Sarah Hagreen presented a workshop entitled, “How Colleges Choose Their Freshman Class,”  and Mark Schwartz from Financial Aid presented “Financial Aid and Scholarships.”   Skip Bailey from Athletics presented a workshop regarding “College Athletic Recruitment” and Sally Barton Dingee from the Counseling Center presented on “How To Choose a Major.”  The Admissions Office thanks them for participating in this event.

“College 101 for Parents” was originally developed by Christine Casalinuovo-Adams to assist parents in the college planning process as they navigate college information overload.  This workshop has become an annual success.
