Tribune Swimmers and Divers Excel At NJCAA Championship Meet


The Monroe Community College men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams finished up their season at the NJCAA Championship this past weekend in Buffalo in record breaking fashion.  In all, 15 new school and Region III /Northeast District records fell.

Leading the way was freshman Tamara Miler who set four individual records. Miler captured national titles in the 500 freestyle (4:58.65) and the 1650 free (17:01.49), setting the 1000 free (10:18.86) record on her split in the 1650. Miler set another record in her second-place finish in the 200 free (1:53.03). Each record set was a new school/Region III/Northeast District record.  On the men’s side, sophomore Michael Klugo led the way with three new records.  Klugo finished fourth in the 50 free (20.72), second in the 200 free (1:39.99) and third in the 100 free (45.44).  Again, each individual record bested the previous school/Region III/Northeast District records.  Tyler Webster also set a new school record in the 100 Backstroke (53.19) in his leadoff leg of the 400 Medley Relay.

The women’s team broke four relay records during the competition.  Xiomara Getrouw, Morgan Lomax, Miler, and Rosalyn Louk set new school/Region III/Northeast District records in their second-place finishes in 200 Medley Relay (1:49.99) and the 400 Medley Relay (4:02.00).  The team of Louk, Sarah Mack, Lomax and Miler combined for new records in a second-place finish in the 800 Free Relay (7:55.66).  Louk, Mack, Getrouw, Miler combined for a fourth-place finish and new records in the 400 Free Relay (3:40.07).  The men’s squad set three new school/Region III/Northeast marks in the relays.  Klugo, Gregory Conklin, Jason Cook, and Gustavo Ramos Dos Santos captured second place in the 800 Free Relay (7:01.23).  Klugo, Webster, Dos Santos, and Conklin combined for new records in second-place finishes in the 200 Free Relay (1:25.23) and the 400 Free Relay (3:07.53). Klugo lowered his 100 Freestyle record on his lead-off leg in the 400 free relay (45.24). The Tribunes had numerous athletes place in the top eight in multiple events at the meet and full results can be found on the MCC Swimming & Diving homepage.

The women’s team set a new mark for points scored (1106) and finished national runner-up to Indian River State College.  It is the fourth time MCC has finished in the runner-up spot.  The women also earned the Spyke Johnson Non-Scholarship title.  They bested rival Darton College by over 500 points to earn the award.  Tamara Miler was named the Female Non-Scholarship Swimmer of the Meet.  The coaching staff of Daniel S. Dubois, Dale Pearce, and Scott Josephson was named the National Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year. 

The men’s team finished the meet in third place with 927 points, also setting a new point mark for the national meet.  The men’s team narrowly missed the runner-up spot to Iowa Lakes Community College, which had 947 points.  The Tribunes were named the Al Zamsky Men's Non-Scholarship champions.   The men’s squad outpaced Darton College (860 points) to earn the title.  Michael Klugo was named the Non-Scholarship Swimmer of the Meet.  Daniel S. Dubois also received the Dr. Jack Cistriano Service Award for his contribution to NJCAA Swimming & Diving.  The 2014-15 season was a record-breaking year and every member of the Monroe Community College TEAM deserves credit for making it the finest season in our College's long history of swimming and diving.
