Passing of Professor Emeritus Robert Flanigan, Chemistry

I am sad to inform the college community that Professor Emeritus Robert Flanigan, formerly of MCC's Chemistry Department, passed away on January 29, 2019 at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley, and his children, Kathleen and Michael.

Robert served in the Army National Guard and earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from St. John Fisher College. He taught chemistry at Edison Technical and Industrial High School for several years, prior to moving to North Carolina. He earned a master's degree in chemistry from the Agricultural and Technical College of North Carolina in Greensboro. A teaching opportunity at MCC brought Robert and his wife back to Rochester.

Robert began his MCC career in 1965 as an assistant professor of chemistry. A member of the American Chemical Society, he enjoyed teaching organic chemistry and quantitative analysis, mathematics and physics. He retired from MCC in 1998. His distinguished service to the college led to his achieving the rank of professor emeritus.

A celebration of Robert's life was held on February 4. Contributions may be made in his memory to Saint Anne Church, the Wilmot Cancer Center, or a charity of your choice.
