The college was recently informed of the passing of Josephine G. "Jo" Schwartz, associate professor emerita, Department of Nursing. Josephine passed away on Nov. 1, 2008. A memorial service was held earlier this month. She was predeceased by her husband, John; she was survived by her step-children, nieces and nephews.
Following 14 years of service at Rochester State Hospital/State of New York Department of Mental Hygiene, Josephine began her MCC career as an assistant professor in 1968 -- excited to be teaching for an associate's degree nursing program. She was highly regarded for her lengthy experience in mental health nursing and for the positive relationships she developed with students. She served on the college's curriculum, budget and awards committees. Josephine retired from MCC in 1981, but continued to teach part time.
At the family's request, memorial contributions may be made to the Monroe Community College Foundation.
