MCC's Tobacco-Free Committee Requests Your Input

On June 12, 2012, the State University of New York Board of Trustees passed a resolution requiring 100 percent tobacco-free environments for all its campuses. MCC’s Tobacco-Free Committee has begun the work required to comply in providing a safer and healthier learning and working environment for all members of the college community.

We are using the expertise of other colleges that are tobacco-free including six SUNY community colleges. Ty Patterson from the National Center for Tobacco Policy and several local health care organizations are also assisting MCC with this effort. Additionally, there are 23 individuals across the college who are leading the development and implementation of MCC’s tobacco-free policy.

Since this is a college-wide initiative we would appreciate input from members of the college community. Attached
you will find drafts of both the policy and the implementation plan. Anyone wishing to comment on either document can submit their remarks for consideration by Monday, September 30, 2013 to: Tobacco-Free Committee chair Dolores Pasto-Ziobro at <
mailto:dpastoziobro@monroecc.edu> or any member of the committee.

We anticipate presenting the policy for board approval in the last months of 2013 with voluntary compliance targeted for September 2014 and full implementation to occur at the start in January 2015. In the meantime, there is much work to do.

Policy implementation will place a special burden on those who choose to continue to smoke. Therefore, MCC will make every effort to assist and support those who wish to cease smoking. Information on stop smoking programs is available through the Human Resources Office and the Student Health Center. A list of additional resources will be available on the MCC website.

This change will not be easy. A smooth transition will require the cooperation of everyone in the college community. We thank you for supporting MCC’s commitment to providing a healthy and environmentally safe campus to live, work and learn.

Sincerely,
