MCC Budget: No Tuition Increase for Students, No Funding Increase for Monroe County

Recognizing current economic challenges, Monroe Community College is holding the line on its funding request to Monroe County and on tuition.

Last evening, the MCC Board of Trustees approved a $92.1 million budget for 2003-04. That budget holds the county's contribution to $13,650,000, the same as the last two years. Further, full-time tuition for New York residents remains at $2,500.

In his budget presentation to the MCC Board of Trustees, President R. Thomas Flynn noted that the budget is a win-win-win for the community, students and Monroe County taxpayers.

"This budget keeps us out in front in developing programs needed by this community, while maintaining our affordability for students and taxpayers," Flynn said. "A talented workforce with skills relevant to the local economy will bring our community out of this economic downturn. MCC develops that workforce by maintaining our affordability and quality. A strong MCC can help drive our community into more positive economic territory."

"The MCC administration put together a solid budget that will move the College and the community forward," said MCC Board of Trustees Chair John R. Parrinello. "That is no small feat, particularly when you look at college budgets and tuition rates across the state."

Exceptionally strong enrollments allow the College to hold the line on tuition and county support. The College has broken
enrollment records for four consecutive years. Fall 2002 enrollment grew 9 percent over Fall 2001. Fall 2003 enrollment is on track to increase 5 percent over Fall 2002.

The College's budget proposal next goes to the Monroe County Legislature for consideration. A vote is expected at the Legislature's August meeting.
