Why Do I Volunteer?

I regard 4H as one of the best youth development organizations. Youth can focus on multiple interest areas (technology, agriculture, animal science, horticulture, public speaking, leadership, foods/nutrition, textiles, photography, etc.) and connect to resources available both locally as well as through Cornell University through Cornell Cooperative Extension. I became interested due to my own involvement in 4H as a teenager. My four teenage daughters will affirm their belief that 4H is the most worthwhile and fun extracurricular activity in which they are involved.

I have enjoyed visiting the Genesee Country Village and Museum for years and especially enjoy the Nature Center. My volunteer activities have included trail maintenance and assisting with the sap, syrup, and sugar events in which the process of collecting maple sap and making maple syrup and sugar is demonstrated. Maple-sugaring was a very fond early childhood memory and I enjoy sharing this activity with visitors to the museum. My role in the maple-sugaring activity is to explain some of the biology of trees and sap flow and collection.
