Schedule of Events for National Sustainability Day at MCC


On Wednesday, Oct. 24, please participate in the following activities in honor of National Sustainability Day at MCC:
12 - 2PM LIGHTBULB EXCHANGE in the ATRIUM sponsored by the Brighton
Campus Student Government Association and Phi Theta Kappa. Students can turn in their old incandescent light bulbs for the more energy efficient CFL’s, which use one fifth the energy and last ten times as long. Students will also have the chance to take a Sustainable pledge and taste samples from Lori’s Natural Food.

12 – 1:30PM WEB CAST in the Warshof Conference Center, Flynn Campus Center (EMPIRE ROOM) hosted by the Sustainability committee featuring Norm Christopher, director of sustainability, Grand Valley State University; Tom Kimmerer, executive director, Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE); and Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature and Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future.

2 - 3PM LECTURE in the Warshof Conference Center, Flynn Campus Center (EMPIRE ROOM) BY Reed Summers, a local attorney who specializes in land use and environmental cases, will present on global warming, and will discuss some of the legislative and legal aspects that pertain to it. 

3 - 4PM PANEL DISCUSSION- TOPICS THAT PERTAIN TO SUSTAINABILITY in the EMPIRE ROOM. Bethany Gizzi, Anthro, Soc, et al, will be moderating the discussion. Chris Hirschler, Health & Physical Education, will be talking about food supply, health, and its relevance to sustainability. Shahin Monshipour, Anthro etc, will talk about fair trade and global equity. Reed Summers, a local attorney and authority on global warming, will talk about global warming. Matt Fox, Transitional Studies, will talk about oil depletion, fossil fuels, and alternative energy. Aman Wolde, Student Support Services, will talk about the emerging role of evangelical Christians and creation theology in the global warming effort. Bob King, Agricultural and Life Sciences will talk about local agriculture, and what is happening locally in terms of sustainability.

4 - 6PM FAIR TRADE in the BRIGHTON ROOM. MCC Sociology 101 service-learning students taught by Shahin Monshipour will present a special program on Fair Trade. The program includes a lecture/slide and video presentation and a display featuring samples of Fair Trade goods produced by artisans from around the world (special focus on Peru and India). Students will also present biographical stories about women in poor countries producing safe, sustainable and beautiful products for the world.

Other happenings!

· Two local retailers who sell Fair Trade products in Rochester will be present and have a wide range of products for "show and tell". Fair Trade coffee will be served and healthy international goodies will be offered.
· SGA will have a booth on the MCC recycling program. The booth will feature information on the detrimental effects of plastic, aluminum and general waste on the environment as well as the benefits and opportunities recycling programs create.
· Nancy Sawyer from the Coffee Connection will have a booth describing how her coffee shop’s fair trade organic coffees directly benefits the environment, the economy, and the lives of Peru and it’s farmers while improving awareness, the conscience and the welfare of local consumers as well as employees.
· Lori’s Natural Foods, Abundance Co-op and Rochester Roots will all have booths explaining their organizations and how they contribute to build a more sustainable society.
· Johnathan Little, professor of Geography, will have a booth to discuss climate change, and separate fact from fiction.
