Veterans Reading and Discussion Group

Vilma Patterson received approval from the NY Council for the Humanities to offer a new reading and discussion program at DCC targeted to veterans and their family members called "Serving: Standing Down."  The goal of this program is to bring together veterans for shared reflection on their service and the transition from active duty to civilian life. This will be done by opening up conversations for veterans (all ages, all deployments, but perhaps especially post 9/11 vets) to reflect on their own service as well as to discuss both the challenges and opportunities of transitioning back to civilian life. The starting point for each discussion is a short piece of literature from a new anthology called "Standing Down:  From Warrior to Civilian," which was designed just for this purpose. This program has already taken place at veterans outreach centers and has received support from the Wounded Warrior Project and the Veterans Upward Bound program. The program will consist of four reading and discussion sessions to be held between September and January.

The national partner on the project is The Great Books Foundation; you can read more about their partnership here: https://www.nyhumanities.org/press/story.php?id=210
