On October 9, 2018, the SUNY Board of Trustees passed a resolution that directs all campuses and System administration to create a consensual sexual and romantic relationship policy. The resolution requires each SUNY campus and System Administration:

  • "[T]o individually develop, with input from appropriate members of their workplace and campus communities, including local governance, a sexual or romantic relationship policy which shall be widely disseminated to their respective communities," on or before March 1, 2019. The resolution sets forth the minimum requirements in bullet point format on pages 3 and 4.
  • To "consider a prohibition against any sexual or romantic relationships between faculty or staff and undergraduate students with input from appropriate members of their workforce and communities, including local governance, and report its opinions on such prohibition to the Chancellor or designee by January 2, 2019."

MCC established a Consensual Relationships Policy in April 2018. Per the above-referenced resolution, MCC is seeking comment from employees and students via the policy portal about amending the current MCC policy to include a prohibition against any sexual or romantic relationships between faculty or staff and students. Comments submitted to the policy portal and statements submitted by shared governance groups will form the basis of the report MCC is required to submit to Chancellor Johnson in January 2019.

The revised language reflects a prohibition against any sexual or romantic relationships between faculty or staff and students in an effort to provide employees and students with a meaningful opportunity to share their thoughts and specific feedback. The additional edits incorporate the minimum requirements set forth in the resolution.
