TCC: Tip of the Day - Use multiple options for Zoom participation

Today's highlight comes from Eric Berg, ESOL/TRS:

One thing I have noticed with this transition to remote learning is a change in the "class participation dynamic". During my zoom classes, everyone has their microphone on mute by default, but throughout the session I encourage students who have questions or comments to participate in one of three ways: unmute yourself and wait to be called, "raise your hand" via zoom and wait to be called on, or send me a private chat.

From providing these options, I have learned two things: First, the same eager students whom could not help but to blurt out answers without raising a hand during in-person class, continue to do so via zoom. It's somehow comforting to know that some things never change! Secondly, students who were less likely to participate during in-person classes are now now more active during zoom sessions. The participation options have invited the more reluctant students, the shy students, and the students afraid of making mistakes in front of others, to become more involved.

If you would like to talk about what's happening in your classes join the daily non-judgmental conversations about teaching during COVID-19. These happen daily from 9 - 10 am and 3 - 4 pm.
